چکیده

The volcanically active Jovian satellite Io has a tenuous S02 atmosphere. The color of S02 is markedly different tha]~ the color of Io as a whole in the 0.4 to 0.6 ~m region. We have exploited this fact to search Voyager 2 images for the condensation of S02 frost on its nightsicle. Measurements of the color of the dayside of Io, and the same geographical region at night. (illuminated by Jupiter’s light), indicate that the night hemisphere is significantly bluer. The most likely explanation for this difference is that S02 frost. condenses on the surface during the night, and sublimates during the clay. This is the first direct evidence for condensation of S02 frost on the nightside of Io.

The collapse of Io’s primary atmosphere in Jupiter eclipse

Volcanic outgassing due to tidal heating is the ultimate source of a tenuous SO2 atmosphere around Jupiter’s moon Io. The question of whether SO2 frost on the surface plays a part, and to what degree, in maintaining Io’s atmosphere with the constant volcanic outgassing is still debated. It is believed that for a sublimation-supported atmosphere, the primary atmosphere should collapse during ecl...

Interpretation of Galileo’s Io plasma and field observations: I0, I24, and I27 flybys and close polar passes

[1] We interpret plasma and magnetic field observations taken during the Galileo spacecraft Io flybys I0 in December 1995, I24 in October 1999, and I27 in February 2000, and we give predictions for a generic pass over Io’s northern pole with a threedimensional, two-fluid plasma model. We show that all previous field and plasma observations by the Galileo spacecraft can be explained without the ...

Mid-Infrared Detection of Large Longitudinal Asymmetries in Io’s SO2 Atmosphere

We have observed about 16 absorption lines of the ν2 SO2 vibrational band on Io, in disk-integrated 19 μm spectra taken with the TEXES high spectral resolution mid-infrared spectrograph at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility in November 2001, December 2002, and January 2004. These are the first ground-based infrared observations of Io’s sunlit atmosphere, and provide a new window on the atmosp...

Chemistry of Sodium, Potassium, and Chlorine in Volcanic Gases on Io

We used thermochemical equilibrium calculations in the O–S– Na–K–Cl–H system to model the speciation of volcanic gases emitted from high-temperature (1000–2000 K) silicate magmas on Io. The effects of temperature, pressure, and bulk composition of the gases are explored. The bulk compositions are based on atomic ratios observed in Io’s plasma torus and extended atmosphere, and from chondritic a...

Photochemistry of a Volcanically Driven Atmosphere on Io:Sulfur and Oxygen Species from a Pele-Type Eruption

To determine how active volcanism might affect the standard picture of sulfur dioxide photochemistry on Io, we have developed a one-dimensional atmospheric model in which a variety of sulfur-, oxygen-, sodium-, potassium-, and chlorine-bearing volatiles are volcanically outgassed at Io’s surface and then evolve due to photolysis, chemical kinetics, and diffusion. Thermochemical equilibrium calc...
